Costa Rica established the National Park System in 1970 to prevent the
destruction of
wilderness areas. As of now, Costa Rica boasts 20 national parks,
8 biological
reserves,
and a wealth
of other protected areas to enchant those who
marvel at the wonders of
nature.
Over 12 percent of the country
is protected as national parks, and a further 16 percent as Indian reserves, biological reserves, wildlife refugees
and wildlife corridors. This means that
more than a quarter of Costa Rica has been set
